 worst comic book?
« Thread Started on Jan 17, 2005, 7:53pm »

Frank, I expect you to weigh in on this...
What's the worst comic book series/story line ever?

I probably don't know enough about comics to even hazard a guess.

A lot of people would list the Spider-Man "Clone Saga" of the late '90s as their least favorite, in which it was revealed that the Peter Parker we'd been reading about since the mid-1970s was actually a clone named Ben Reilly. The one, true Spider-Man had been killed waaay back then. Or something. Generally, the readers hated Ben Reilly, his stupid hoodie-sweatshirt costume, and before you knew it, Peter was alive, Ben was dead, and the whole thing was undone.

The arc--which lasted a year or two--bugged me at first, but by the time Ben was revealed as the actual clone (translation: retconned into being the actual clone), and wasting away, I felt sorry for the sucker.

So my votes for the worst comics ever are:

-Worst Storyline: DC's "Identity Crisis" mini-series, which just wrapped up a 7-issue run. What's the prob? Well, DC hired a big-time novelist, Brad Meltzer to write a serious, dramatic, character-driven mini-series. So far, so good. It was a murder mystery, to boot. Yay to that. Unfortunately, he managed to crap all over the history of the DCU, turning the Justice League into a bunch of mind-wiping scumbags (they freaking mind-wiped Batman, for cryin' out loud). That murder mystery bit? Eh...not so much. The book was full of red herrings. The revelation of the killer's identity meant nothing. There were no clues--not a one. The killer's motive? She was crazy. Sales went through the roof, though, proving that with enough hype, you can sell anything.

-Worst Series: The current Firestorm series wins this, hands down. Since 1978 or so, there's only been one Firestorm: Ronnie Raymond (aided by his "other half," Martin Stein, as seen on the final season or two of Superfriends). The character starred in a couple of series of his own--one of which ran over 100 issues. His joining the JLA in 1980 or thereabouts was A Big Deal. So in 2004, DC decided to give Firestorm his own series again. All the ads said, "Because you demanded it--Firestorm is back!" Except...ah...no. The suit was back. The powers were back. But the character? Nuh-uh. Not Ronnie. It was some new kid named Jason Rusch. Long story short, it was announced last week that the writer is leaving, and Ronnie (killed off in the aforementioned Identity Crisis) is rumored to be returning (probably just in time for the series to be cancelled).

I gotta tell ya, when they gave us the script for the GI Joe vs Transformers Marvel comics, I was all "hey cool idea." Then I read it. I phoned it in that day folks. It was just awful. Then they went and did it again right after the relaunch. Man, two universes that should NEVER be together.

Over and out.

I feel the worst comic book ever is something called OutBreed by one freak show porn mustache wearing Bruce Schoengood. What do u think about that?

I pitched "Dallas Cowboys versus Galactus" to Marvel back in the day. In hindsight, that was probably a stupid idea.
